Have you looked at your tax bill yet? (10.23.2008)

The numbers are in.  Brace yourselves.  $73,963.37 MORE than last year!!  81% increase!!

If you haven't seen your tax bill yet, or you are curious as to how your neighbors faired in this hailstorm of taxes, check it out.

The fire district is the main reason for the increase, although the county, in some kind of Wall Street wisdom, has determined our home values went up drastically.  Would someone please get the county supervisor a news paper!  See if they have checked the financial situation that the entire freak'n world is in and what's going on with home values. (yeah, I'm venting - it's my web site, I can do that!)

And now...some thoughts about how we could have avoided this a bit.

I do remember hearing over and over how being in a fire district will bring down our insurance bill and make our homes easier to sell.  Funny, my insurance guy doesn't care if we are in a volunteer fire district and now, if I went to sell my home I'd have to tell the prospective buyer the taxes, that were $2,000 last year are $3,000 this year.  Even people who have dirt lots are seeing $200-500 increases!!  Conservative guesses are that the fire district will gain about $37,000 a year from our pockets at Bonita. (this is derived from the numbers on my bill and extrapolating from the community totals)

So, to recap, let's list the advantages and disadvantages of being in the fire district.  And be sure to let me know if I'm wrong on any of this.

Advantages:

  • Gives some people something to volunteer for.   Wouldn't a hobby have been cheaper for the rest of us!?!?

Disadvantages:

  • Many people on fixed incomes now owe $50-166 a MONTH more in taxes

  • Response time isn't even a statistic that can be provided

  • The 'ambulance' isn't licensed to transport

  • The average age of a volunteer fire fighter is 70.5 years old - nothing wrong with the age, I hope to be that someday, but dragging hoses around and running into burning buildings??

  • The promise is that the first house will probably burn down but they may be able to save others.

  • Much harder to sell our homes

  • Fire chief and his family are under indictment for embezzlement at former district? (at least you know your tax money is in good hands!)  Maricopa County Court and Supreme Court of Arizona case info as it happens.

  • We are expected to finance our own fire station construction - something the good folks who pushed this down your throats never really came out and told you - might have gotten a NO vote, can't have that now!  By the way - when someone says the word 'grant'?  That's money that comes from the government...and guess where they get it?  That's right!  From your grand kids!

Yeah, the above is just my opinion based on facts and observations.  I tend to tell the whole truth as I see it, and not just the goody two shoes blue sky edition.  I do think that Bonita would be a far better place to live if some people didn't find it necessary to take care of us.  But heck, if they insist on taking care of us, how about $163,000 worth of services!?!

Oh, because everyone is being milked so badly we are NOT accepting any more donations for our brush trucks.  Enough is enough!  Chuck and I thank you SO much for your past support!

The flag on our pole? (7.18.2008)

You may notice the flag in the picture is not always old glory.  It is the freedom that living here offers that allows me to have some fun.  If it's a yellow flag, you are looking at America's first flag.  It says "Don't Tread on Me" and has a rattler on it.  A naval (or 'skip') version of this flag fly's off the fan tail of some of our ships in the middle east today! 

Or, you might see, the Jolly Roger!  This, or a form of it, was first used by the Knights Templar on ships they used to plunder the rich royalty.  The term comes from the French term 'Jolie Rouge', or 'pretty red'.  So, why would you call a black and white flag red?  Ahh, if a pirate flew a RED flag it meant they didn't take prisoners.  This is bad if you are about to be boarded.  So, if it's not red, it's a pretty red...according to the French anyhow.  I like it because it's an honest version of a smiley face.  And, I'm an old guy and don't really care what anyone thinks, so there! (grin)  It's still safe to visit...I'm not a very good aim with the cannon anyhow...and of course, the flag isn't red.

Old Glory, in as perfect a condition as possible, will always fly on holidays that honor and remember the great men, women, and moments in our history.

Weather studies?

Over the years I've had a few requests for our weather history.  Since I installed the weather station in 2002 it's been logging 48 readings per day, that's once every 30 minutes.  Lots of data about winds, rain fall, etc.  So, for those folks interested in weather study data, here you go!

Have you ever noticed how much fun it is to find someone in Payson to come build or fix something for you.  Not only do you not know if they are any good, you don't even know if they are going to show up!!  So, we are building a list of contractors who have proven to one of us that they not only show up, but do a good job!  If you've had good luck with anyone and would recommend them to your neighbors please email me with their name, contact information, what they do, and what they did for you.  I've got the list going already and hope it grows to a fine list of contacts to make your life at Bonita a little easier.  Email me at ai7r@presenceknown.com
