Sometime this last weekend the Nobel's cabin was burglarized. They jerks
took a load of furniture and other odds and ends. They took their time and
even had a few beers while they did it!! John Holloway, their closest
neighbor, noticed the door ajar and investigated. And Doyle Warner said he
saw a flat bed truck drive down the hill in broad daylight!!
And, your community is your business and it's
not a problem to notice strange things going on. Take a moment to write
down a license plate number, or take a picture with your phone, or if you are
with others check it out and as some pointed questions, like who are you and why
are you here?!? Be safe always, but be watchful!
We have a LOT of construction going on in the
community and there have been some stories about these folks wandering and
snooping around some of our homes. If you notice a worker doing this find
out who they are and who they are working for. Then let the owner know.
Just talking with the 'stray' may be enough to let them know they are being
watched.
Love grass you love to hate!
(08.3.2008)
Linda has done some research and found what
appears to be a love grass killer. We bought something that has the magic
potion in it and we'll try a little this coming weekend and let you know how it
works. Meanwhile, if you want to check out some of the web sites we found
this info on here you go:
Update:(08.10.2008) Linda tested a couple
small areas with the spray and after a few days the Love grass had a serious
yellow tint to it. We'll know more in a couple weeks!
As more people in the community bring up
their own wireless (wifi) internet here are some things to remember to not only
be safe but to play well with others.
Always have your router configured to
use WPA security. WEP is almost like having no security and can be
broken in minutes. WPA is the way to go, although, older laptops
usually don't have WPA as an option.
Use channels 1, 6, or 11. There
are 11 channels but only three can be used with today's wireless.
Here's way. When the 11 channels were first introduced, wifi was much
slower and slow signals are narrower. At that time all 11 channels
were fine. But, soon after the speeds increased dramatically.
When you have a signal that carries information the signal gets wider as the
speed increases. Today a single high speed wifi signal takes up 5
channels of those 11. So, let's say one station is set for channel 1
and another is set for channel 6. If there is another one set on 3 for
example, any time there is data on channel 3 the other two see interference
from it because it overlaps being 5 channels wide. Wifi works well
together even sharing the same channel because they can understand and
ignore the other units data, but it one if a couple channels away they both
see interference, or noise, and they end up having to retry over and over
and that wastes time, energy, and bandwidth making it slower for everyone
involved. So, 1, 6, and 11 folks!!
Please note - if you use the pit
(07.28.2008)
If you are hauling your trimmings to the pit
I've been asked to pass along something that will help the fire guys who
maintain the pit a bunch! They ask that you put your pile as close to the
back of the pit as there is room. So many people just come in and plop
they pile right in front so others can't find room. They also need to be
able to drive around the back of it to some extent to help pile it in the center
for burning. Just as you pass the gate there is a little space on the
left that is an obvious path around to the back. Don't block that path.
Drive up further and then dump up in the center/back area of the pit. The
fire dudes thank you.
Note:(8.3.2008) I've heard rumors that we
no longer have a key available. So this may be a moot point.
How it should be
(07.28.2008)
The following is based on my observations,
experience, and sprinkled with a little opinion.
When I was on the board of the association
I was under the impression that if you were a land owner you were a member of
the community and had as much say so in how the things went as the next guy.
Dues were donations only and it didn't matter if you donated or not, your input
and the good of the entire community was based on "all men are created equal".
The current situation is simple...join and be a part of the decisions or don't
and you have no right to be heard. Seems that $75 a year is pretty
important these days. It's nice to know you can still buy your rights, huh?
And, since I work for a City, I know there
are a lot of rules about public meetings of organizations. I don't know
how official the association is but they do seem to make up the rules as they go
along. Like having meetings on the fly without any public notice. I
think there is a law somewhere that says they have to at least post a notice 24
hours in advance. Not all meetings are reported with minutes. And
the cherry on this cake is that they go back after the fact and change minutes
to fit the circumstances weeks later.
Good ethical organizations stand up and
show who voted how and when. Then, if there is another meeting, where a
bad choice is reversed, that becomes another set of minutes showing, once again,
exactly who did and said what. They don't go back and edit a previous
meetings minutes to save face. Let's
face it, how can you trust an organization that isn't 100% square with their
reporting? Would you trust one that was, say, 94.2% honest and ethical?
Interesting events!
(07.24.2008)
It was reported here earlier that the
association board had decided that residents had to be a member (@$75) in order
to use the key to the pit. The posted minutes of the meeting explained
that as well as a separate document that showed how to get to a different pit if
you were not a member. This Thursday evening we came up and our plan was
to actually photograph the minutes to have documented proof. Well, we
aren't sure what caused it, maybe public pressure (?), but, the minutes of the
meeting seem to have changed. That, in itself, is a bit odd. There
is now only a mention that the board had a unanimous vote to have one person
hold the key and that people needed to call for it. Odd because it's
always been done that way. It tends to make one wonder why the board would
have to vote on such a thing? Like I said before, the key really doesn't
'belong' to the association to be making any kind of policy.
The question still stands on why the water
commissioner was told to tell John that none of the 1000-2000 gallons of flush
water that normally just runs off on the ground can NOT be used to top off our
privately owned fire trucks. John has asked for a written document to that
affect and has not been given one nor an explanation for why the board feels it
is better to waste water than to use it to fight possible fires. When we
have that document I'll share it here.
(08.08.2008 update) We got an official letter from the association telling
us we had to ask permission each time we planned to fill the trucks with the
flushed water. Frankly, I don't consider them in a position to be in
charge of the water company so we'll just fill them from our taps and let them
waste their water as they see fit.
The flag on our pole?
(7.18.2008)
You may notice the flag in the picture is not
always old glory. It is the freedom that living here offers that allows me
to have some fun. If it's a yellow flag, you are looking at
America's first
flag. It says "Don't Tread on Me" and has a rattler on it. A
naval (or 'skip') version of this flag fly's off the fan tail of some of our
ships in the middle east today!
Or, you might see, the
Jolly Roger! This, or a form of it, was first used by the Knights
Templar on ships they used to plunder the rich royalty. The term comes
from the French term 'Jolie Rouge', or 'pretty red'. So, why would you
call a black and white flag red? Ahh, if a pirate flew a RED flag it meant
they didn't take prisoners. This is bad if you are about to be boarded.
So, if it's not red, it's a pretty red...according to the French anyhow. I
like it because it's an honest version of a smiley face. And, I'm an old
guy and don't really care what anyone thinks, so there! (grin) It's still
safe to visit...I'm not a very good aim with the cannon anyhow...and of course,
the flag isn't red.
Old Glory, in as perfect a condition as possible,
will always fly on holidays that honor and remember the great men, women, and
moments in our history.
Weather studies?
Over the years I've had a few requests for our
weather history. Since I installed the weather station in 2002 it's been
logging 48 readings per day, that's once every 30 minutes. Lots of data
about winds, rain fall, etc. So, for those folks interested in weather
study data, here you go!
If you are looking to live in a nice quiet
community in the mountains here you go. As people in the community have
sites for sale and ask me to post I'll place them here.
Have you ever noticed how much fun
it is to find someone in Payson to come build or fix something for you.
Not only do you not know if they are any good, you don't even know if they are
going to show up!! So, we are building a list of contractors who have
proven to one of us that they not only show up, but do a good job! If
you've had good luck with anyone and would recommend them to your neighbors
please email me with their name, contact information, what they do, and what
they did for you. I've got the list going already and hope
it grows to a fine list of contacts to make your life at Bonita a little easier.

Chuck and Penny Fine, and Dave and Linda Kelley
located and paid for these engines out of their own pockets. There was a
narrow window of opportunity to purchase these trucks so we jumped on them.
The total costs including the trucks, fuel, insurance, and
travel expenses were $14,000! And there will be the on going expenses
of upkeep. Please consider donating to help pay for and maintain these
fine fire containment trucks for our community.

Another contributor in a
big way is John Goulette! He has spent hours of his own time working on
both trucks getting them in shape. He has the pump on 'Pacific' purring
like a kitten...actually, with these pumps and the V8 engines it's more like
purring like a lion! He's worked at getting one of the tires fixed
and did a little engine work. I think he's having some fun, but his help is
VERY important to this project.

Donations are over $8,600 so far! All it takes is a
little support from everyone to keep these trucks in tip-top shape and ready to
roll!! Chuck and Dave wanted nothing more than to give to our community.
For the community to show this much support for the effort is really heart
warming to say the least. It also gives contributors the same feeling of
giving to the community. Bonita Creek is like no other community on the rim!
These trucks should provide us with some
protection until help arrives.
Trust me, these days fires that spread for 30 minutes are serious problems!!
We don't want a fire that gets big enough that they name it.
IMPORTANT!!!
No structure fires will be fought with these trucks. You should call 911 on any fire. This truck and those who
will be able to use it will not be trained to fight structure fires and no home
is worth a life.
